SOURCES FOR JEWISH PUBLICATIONS

The amateur Torah scholar will be borrowing or buying many publications. Following are some sources.

Bookstores and Remote Suppliers

Christian Book Distributors

Although the bulk of their offerings are very much aimed at a Christian readership and interest, because of the Hebrew Bible origins of Christianity, they also have a large number of publications relating to Hebrew and the Hebrew Bible, including many of those mentioned by Bluethread. Most are discounted from list prices by 10% to 30% or more. Call 1-508-977-5000 for catalog, or write P.O. Box 7000, Peabody, MA 01961-7000.

Ordering through the Web

  • More and more bookstores now have a Web presence. Some, like Amazon, exist only on the Web:

    Amazon
    http://www.amazon.com

A discount book order service available on the World Wide Web. It will provide almost all English-language books, often at a discount.

  • A good place to start to find places where you can order books through the Web is the Yahoo subdirectory which lists bookselling companies:

Being listed in Yahoo is no guarentee of quality.

Finding Local Bookstores

Many cities have Judaica stores that carry a nice range of books about the Hebrew Bible. Although their stock is understandably more on observance than on scholarly discussion, they also often have some of the titles in Bluethread. They are usually happy to order titles not in stock. The amateur Torah scholar may want to consider showing support for the local Judaica store by purchasing there.

The American Booksellers Association (ABA) has a limited list of home pages for bookstores that have indicated they carry

religious materials

the extent and viewpoint of those stores vary. ABA also has a

complete list
http://www.bookweb.org/directory

of all its members, by state and city, whether or not they have web pages.

The amateur Torah scholar should also be aware that some Jewish bookstores and suppliers do not necessarily include a wide range of viewpoints. For example, Levine Jewish Books and Judaica, a wonderful store in mid-Manhattan, with a welcome and extensive stock of traditional and contemporary texts, does not carry publications of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, which is a Reform organization.

In addition, many titles listed by Bluethread can also be found new and used in bookstores in college communities and in small, medium and large cities. Bookstores affiliated with seminaries (Christian and Jewish) will also have these titles. Such books may be required for related college courses archaeology, religion, or Middle Eastern history. As used books, since many of the titles have been published several years ago, they find their way into used book stores. Also, a local general bookstore will usually be happy to order any title in print.

Publishers

Following are addresses for publishers that may not necessarily be known at some bookstores.
