NOT EVERY FRUIT PIE IS KOSHER

There are two poential problems:

1. Many fruit pies use gelatin, which can be made from non-kosher animals; and

2. The best shortening for pie crusts, and one frequently used, is lard, which is processed pig fat.

...every animal that has true hoofs but without clefts through the hoofs or that does not chew the cud--they are unclean for you

Lev. 11:26

the swine--although it has true hoofs, with the hoofs cleft through, it does not chew the cud: it is unclean for you.

Lev. 11:7

This brings up the question of where you buy food which you don't prepare yourself. Do you assume that your bakery never uses lard or gelatin? Do you feel that gelatin as a substance is so removed from the original animal that it is no longer forbidden?. Do you care one way or the other?
